The Excel 2010 Application Menu consists of the Restore, Move, Size, Minimize, Maximize and Close commands.

Restore

The restore command returns the Excel application window to the size it was before it was maximized. This command will be grayed out if the Excel application window is not maximized.

Move

After selecting the move command the Excel application window can be moved by the arrow keys on the keyboard. This command will be grayed out if the Excel application window is maximized.

Size

After selecting the size command the Excel application window can be re-sized by the arrow keys. This command will be grayed out if the Excel application window is maximized.

Minimize

After selecting the minimize command the Excel application window will be minimized.

Maximize

After selecting the maximize command the Excel application window will be maximized. This command will be grayed out if the Excel application window is maximized.

Close

After selecting the close command the Excel application will close. A prompt will appear asking if any unsaved workbooks should be saved.

The Excel 2010 Application Title Bar is shown below.

Workbook File Name

The Excel 2010 Workbook File Name will display in the Excel 2010 Application Title Bar if the active workbook is maximized.  If the active workbook is not maximized the workbook file name will be displayed in the Excel 2010 Workbook Title Bar.

Multi Sheet Indicator

The Excel 2010 Multi Sheet Indicator will display [Group] on the Excel 2010 Application Title Bar if multiple worksheets are selected and the active workbook is maximized.  If the active workbook is not maximized then multi sheet indicator will be displayed on the Excel 2010 Workbook Title Bar.

Application Caption

The Excel 2010 Application Caption is a VBA property that allows users to customize what is displayed in the Excel 2010 Title Bar.

The Excel 2010 Application Window Controls has two possible displays: maximized window and restored window.

Maximized Window

If the Excel 2010 Application Window is maximized then the Excel 2010 Application Window Controls will look like the example shown below. This Excel 2010 Application Window Controls contains the minimize, restore, and close application commands.

Restored Window

If the Excel 2010 Application Window is restored then the Excel 2010 Application Window Controls will look like the example shown below. A restored window is simply a window that is not maximized. This version of the Excel 2010 Application Window Controls is similar to the maximized window version of the Excel 2010 Application Window Controls, but instead of the restore command, this version has the maximize command.

Minimize Command

This command will minimize the Excel 2010 Application Window.

Maximize Command

This command will maximize the Excel 2010 Application Window. This command will only be available if the the Excel 2010 Application Window is not already maximized.

Restore Command

This command will restore the Excel 2010 Application Window to the size it was before it was maximized. If the Excel 2010 Application Window is not maximized this command will not be available.

Close Command

This command will close the Excel 2010 Application. Excel will ask to save any unsaved workbooks before closing.

Above is an image of the Excel 2010 Quick Access Toolbar.  The toolbar itself consists of two parts: Excel commands and the quick access toolbar customization menu.

Customization Menu

The Excel 2010 Quick Access Toolbar Customization Menu allows users to add or remove commands by simply selecting or deselecting a check box. The quick access toolbar customization menu can also be used to open the quick access toolbar customization tab.

Customization Tab

The Excel 2010 Quick Access Toolbar Customization Tab is located in the Excel Options Dialog.

File Tab

The file tab opens the file menu. The file menu allows users to open, save or close files, add permissions, and view many different options within Excel.

Active Tab

The active tab is nothing more than the ribbon tab that is selected and currently be displayed below the ribbon tabs.

Main Ribbon Tabs

The Excel ribbon has several tabs that are displayed on the ribbon automatically. The tabs consist of some of the most common commands and actions, such as insert objects, formatting cells or data, and importing and exporting data.

Tool Ribbon Tabs

The tool ribbon tabs are specific to certain tools.  For example if you create a shape you could see the drawing tools tab, or if you import picture, you will see the picture tools tabs.

Custom Ribbon Tabs

The custom ribbon tab is a new feature with the Excel 2010 Ribbon.  These are tabs created by the users to add macros, commands that may not be displayed elsewhere or perhaps they just want to organize a group of commands differently.

Ribbon Groups

Each ribbon tab consists of ribbon groups and ribbon commands.  The ribbon groups are another way of sorting commands within a tab. Certain ribbon groups even have shortcuts to other tools, menus or dialogs that help assist that ribbon group.

Ribbon Toolbox

The ribbon toolbox contains the minimize/expand ribbon button and a shortcut to Microsoft Excel Help.

Workbook Toolbox

If the active workbook is maximized then the workbook toolbox will be located to the right of the ribbon toolbox.

Display Cell Reference of Active Cell

The name box will automatically display the Cell Reference of the active cell if the cell does not have a defined name.

Display Name of Selected Range

The name box will automatically display the name of a selected range if name has already been defined for the selected range.

Defining a Name

The name box can be used to define a name for a cell or a range of cells, simply by selecting what you want to name and typing the name in the name box.

Selecting Cell

The name box can be used to select a cell by simply typing in the address of the cell. For example if you want to select the cell in the second column of the third row, then you could just type B2.

Name Box List

The name box list is list of already named ranges. By selecting a name from the list it will select the range of cells the name represents. If the range is not currently visible it will activate the worksheet that contains the range. To open the Name Box list simple select the down area on the right of the Name Box.

Remove Name

To remove or edit a name from the list of named ranges, use the Name Manager. The name manager can also add new named ranges.

The Excel 2010 Formula bar has two sizes: condensed and expanded.

Condensed Formula Bar

The condensed formula bar contains the Insert Function Command, Formula Bar Text Box, Expand Command, Horizontal Re-sizer and Vertical Re-sizer.

Expanded Formula Bar

The expanded formula bar contains everything the condensed formula bar contains, except instead of the Expand Command, the expanded formula bar contains the Condense Command.

Insert Function Command

The expanded formula bar contains everything the condensed formula bar contains, except instead of the Expand Command, the expanded formula bar contains the Condense Command.

Insert Function Command

This command will open the Insert Function Dialog. This dialog can be used to search for a function to insert into the active cell.

Formula Bar Text Box

This text box can be used to view, edit or enter data, functions or formulas within the active cell.

Condense Command

This command will change the formula bar from the expanded formula bar to the condensed formula bar. This command is only available if the formula bar is not already condensed.

Expand Command

This command will change the formula bar from the condensed formula bar to the expanded formula bar. This command is only available if the formula bar is not already expanded.

Horizontal Re-sizer

The horizontal re-sizer is used to re-size the formula bar left to right. The bigger the formula bar get the smaller the Name Box gets.

Vertical Re-sizer

The vertical re-sizer is used to re-size the formula bar top to bottom. As the formula bar is re-sized vertically the area for the workbooks will be shrunk vertically.

Workbook Types

There are many types of workbooks within Excel. Each workbook serves different purposes and certain workbooks can not be opened in previous versions of Excel.

Workbook Window

Each workbook in Excel has one window by default. Users can create more windows of the same workbook to view data in multiple areas of the same workbook at the same time.

Workbook Menu

The workbook menu allows users to restore, move, size, minimize, maximize and close the workbook window.

Workbook Title Bar

The workbook title bar displays the name of workbook by default.  The workbook title bar can display other values as well. If the workbook window is maximized then this will become a part of the application title bar.

Workbook Toolbox

The workbook toolbox allows the users to minimize, restore or maximize, and close the workbook window. This toolbox will be located on the ribbon when the workbook window is maximized.

Worksheet Arrows

The worksheet arrows are used to navigate through the worksheet tabs.  These arrows can be useful if you have a lot of worksheets within your workbook.

Active Sheet Tab

The active sheet tab is simply the worksheet tab of the worksheet that is currently displayed within the workbook window.

Worksheets Tabs

The worksheets tabs are a collection of selected tabs, that once selected can be used to display the selected worksheet in the active workbook window.

Insert Worksheet Tab

The insert worksheet tab will add a new blank worksheet to the end of the worksheets tabs.

Worksheet Tabs Re-sizer

The worksheet tabs re-sizer will adjust the amount of worksheet tabs that are displayed left to right.
